The opera was first performed at the Teatro Nuovo in Naples in October 1775 and was a great success. The story is about Don Tammaro Promontorio, a man so enamored with ancient philosophy that he believes himself to be Socrates, and the slapstick that ensues when he imitates Socrates' way of life.
