Donizetti created more than 200 songs. This is the fifth and sixth installment of the complete song cycle project. The Donizetti songs are performed by Ermonella Yao, a soprano singer at the top of the opera world, with her outstanding expressive power. The prolific and versatile Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti, one of the central figures of Italian bel canto opera, composed more than 200 songs, most of which are rarely performed. Most of them were rarely performed, and several were completely unknown until recently. Under the supervision of musicologist Roger Parker, Opera Lara's artistic director and conductor Carlo Rizzi will play the piano, and Opera Lara will release a series of eight recital albums of complete solo songs. The project is a strong statement of the importance of Donizetti as a central figure in the 19th century song repertoire and of the Italian school of music in a field long dominated by German and French composers. Soprano Hermonella Yao is in charge of this Vols. 5 & 6 (2 CD set). Yao has won acclaim in the world's leading opera houses, receiving the 2024 Oper! Award for Best Female Singer, the 2023 ICMA Artist of the Year, and the 2024 Opera XXI for Best Foreign Artist). In Volume 5 (Italian Songs) and Volume 6 (French Songs) of the series, she demonstrates an exceptional ability to convey emotion through song. Yao's singing is rich in "natural charm" and "breathless expression," especially in Donizetti's early and late works, where she "sings with a skillful range of vocal color and dynamics," "breathes new life into many unknown Donizetti songs," and "sings with the delicate, spun beauty and grace she is known for, It was in Donizetti's works that I discovered her unparalleled tenderness.
