Andrea Fridg makes the world premiere recording of Johann Adolf Hasse’s Harpsichord Sonatas (Op. 7)! Recreating the sound of the era on an original harpsichord from 1768, preserved in excellent condition! This is the fourth release from the Dutch early music label “GlauxRecords,” founded by Stefano Alesi, founder of Stile Galante, and Andrea Fridg, the ensemble’s harpsichordist and a keyboardist active with the Dutch Bach Society and Concerto Köln. This is the world premiere recording of the “Collection of Harpsichord Sonatas, Op. 7,” a collection compiled and published in 1758 by London publisher John Walsh to introduce Johann Adolf Hasse’s keyboard music to London audiences. In addition to authentic works by Hasse, the collection includes pieces attributed to Baldassare Garuppi (1708–1785) (T.18), such as No. 6. The performance is by harpsichordist Andrea Fridge, one of the label’s directors, who also handled the recording, editing, and mastering. The instrument used is a 1768 Amsterdam-made harpsichord by Carl Frederik Leske, originating from the collection of Dutch keyboard player Menno van der Vlist. This instrument has retained its original appearance from over 250 years ago to an exceptional degree and is an extremely rare original specimen that has not undergone any major restoration in later times. Fridge does not conform to modern recording standards; instead, she employs a variety of registrations—including rare combinations such as “Lute + 4-foot” and “Front 8-foot + Lute”—and adopts a recording technique that captures the natural acoustic changes resulting from the resonance of the strings when the dampers are released.
