The MDG label has previously released bassoon-focused albums such as the Goltberg Variations ( MDG. 90319146) by the Bassoon Ensemble and the Gürzenich Bassoon Quintet, but this time, she performs arrangements for bassoon of works for solo flute by J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, and Friedrich Kuhlau. Celeste Marie Roy is a member of the Baroque Society of America. Celeste Marie Roy is also an accomplished baroque bassoonist, and her virtuosity and lightness of touch on the modern instrument are well demonstrated. Kuhlau, whose work is included at the end of the album, was a prolific composer who left over 200 works, despite the loss of all his unpublished manuscripts in a fire.There is an anecdote that he met Beethoven in Vienna in 1825, and Beethoven composed a humorous canon in his honor, "Kuhl, nicht lau (Cool, not lukewarm)" WoO.191. The three fantasias included here are written in the style of Harmonie Musik, which was popular at the time, beginning with variations on two arias from Mozart's "Don Giovanni" and ending with a canzonetta by Francesco Bianchi.
