Mikhail Glinka laid the foundation of modern Russian music in the 19th century. Born into a wealthy aristocratic family, Glinka was interested in music from an early age and was fortunate enough to learn piano from John Field, who was visiting Russia at the time. However, he did not become a musician at first and began working as a civil servant in 1824. In 1930, concerned about his health, he moved to Italy. There he heard various operas that were popular at the time, and his variations on these themes became popular. However, after three years in Italy, Glinka became homesick and returned to Russia." Variations on Alyabiev's "The Nightingale" was written around that time. From then on, Glinka produced a series of works rooted in the Russian national consciousness that won him acclaim. Naxos Japan
