A collection of arrangements presented by Ilya Yashin and Yana Batina as “creative criticism.” An ambitious work that draws out the hidden essence of masterpieces by Ravel, Grieg, and Gershwin through the cello. This collection of arrangements for cello and piano is themed around transcriptions as “creative criticism” that highlight the hidden essence of the original works, rather than simply substituting one instrument for another. Ravel’s “Violin Sonata No. 1 (Posthumous)” is a work that, thanks to a newly discovered autograph score, has been identified as the first movement of an unfinished sonata. By shifting the lyrical melodies—which evoke the influence of Fauré—from the violin to the lower-midrange of the cello, the arrangement lends the piece a more introspective and densely expressive quality. In the following “Kaddish,” the world of prayer modeled after the chanting in a synagogue (a Jewish place of worship) is transposed to the cello. Through a silent recitative in the lower register and leaps to the upper register, the piece expresses the ambiguity between ritual and secular remembrance. Grieg’s “Violin Sonata No. 3” is known for the composer’s own cello arrangement of the second movement, but this recording features Ivan Skavani’s arrangement of the complete work. By inserting a short cadenza between the first and second movements and adding a modulation to the development section of the second movement—which creates a sense of harmonic floating not found in the original violin score—the cello is established as a solo narrator, highlighting the dialogue between Nordic lyricism and formal beauty. The three pieces from Gershwin’s opera *Porgy and Bess* are a joint arrangement by Yasin and Batina, based on the orchestral score, in which the cello takes on not only the vocal parts but also the instrumental obbligatos. The album unravels the depths of a score where the roots of the African American community in the American South intersect with those of Jewish immigrants—from the elements of Negro spirituals in “Summertime,” to the memory of Jewish chanting (the Adonai Malach mode) underlying “That’s Not Necessarily So,” and the fusion of blues and tragic opera arias in “He’s Gone.” While preserving the tonal identity of the cello, this album rediscovers historical memories and diverse roots, offering an intellectual journey that will appeal to chamber music enthusiasts.
