The highly acclaimed recording of the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach by Masaaki Suzuki. The sixth volume includes the first 11 pieces of the Leipzig Chorale (BWV 651 - BWV 661), conceived around 1739, a "re-edition" of the organ chorales composed between 1708 and 1717 during Bach's stay in Weimar. The chorales are based on Lutheran melodies, which Bach was particularly drawn to, and were composed not as preludes for congregational singing, but as sacramental accompaniments and concert pieces. Together with the Organ Pieces, the Schübler Chorale, and the third volume of the Clavier, the Leipzig Chorale is the pinnacle of Bach's organ music. In this recording, Masaaki Suzuki plays the Schnittger organ at the Matini Church in Groningen, the Netherlands.Alp Schnittger (1648-1719) was the most famous organ builder in Northern Germany in the 17th century, and Buxtehude, Handel, and Bach all admired and loved Schnittger organs.
