Jean Chakmul's new series "Schubert+" begins. The first release is a SACD hybrid disc of Schönberg! Three years after recording Schubert's "Swan Song" (KKC-6442 / BIS SA-2530) arranged by Liszt, Jean Chakmul, first prize winner of the 10th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in 2018, has started a new series called "Schubert+"! The series was born out of Chakmul's desire to not only focus on Schubert's major works by juxtaposing them with works by composers who were influenced by his music, but also to give each piece a new appeal. The first volume of the program features Schubert's two sonatas (No. 4 in A minor, D.537 and No. 20 in A major, D.959) interspersed with Schoenberg's three pieces, Op. 11, which attempts an atonal setting. The reasons for this combination are, first, that the theme of the slow movement of Schubert's No. 4 is also used in the finale of No. 20, and second, that Schubert and Schoenberg share the same subjective expression of music, even though they have different ways of expression.
