This is the ECM debut of Lucian Van, an up-and-coming pianist from Romania whose abilities are highly acclaimed by Paul Motian. Lucian Van, a rising Romanian pianist, made his ECM debut live with American violinist/violinist Matt Maneri, son of Joe Maneri, a mature saxophone player who has also left works for ECM, and is known for his many leader albums and collaborations with Matthew Shipp and others. Recorded in June 2011 in Târgu Mureş, Romania. Lucian Van moved from his native Romania to New York City in 1999, where he was recognized by Paul Motian for his abilities, and has performed live and in productions with Jorge Enescu and many other musicians. Born and raised in a small village in the Balkans, the melting pot of Europe's ethnic groups, Ban's lyrical sense and delicate touch on the piano intertwine with Maneli's incisive viola, making this album a must for fans of ECM-like static improvisation.
