Description:

Gilberto Gil’s debut album, *Louvacao*, was released in 1967 by Philips Records. On the eve of the rise of Tropicália and the electric guitar, the guitar of this artist from Bahia takes center stage in songs arranged by Carlos Monteiro e Souza, Dori Caymmi, and Leonardo Bruno. Social, political, and religious issues are transformed into samba, bossa nova, classic carnival tunes, and rhythms of the Northeast. The title track, “Louvacao,” is a stunning collaboration with Torquato Neto, who also co-wrote the precocious and bittersweet nostalgic baion “Arua.” His passion for Bahia flows like water in the lyrical “Beira-mar,” a collaboration with Caetano Veloso. Equally poetic is “Lunik9,” which depicts the landing of the Soviet lunar probe Lunik 9. “Perhaps the moonlight no longer illuminates my songs,” he imagines. In “Ensaio Geral,” he calls on young people to ensure that truth prevails amidst a carnival steeped in political significance. The collaboration with Torquato and Geraldo Vandre, “O Rancho da Rosa Vermelha,” evokes ancient festivals, while the masterpiece samba “Mancada,” imbued with the spirit of bossa nova, references samba schools. The brilliant “Roda,” a collaboration with João Augusto, stands out for its rhythmic originality and critical lyrics. “Viramundo,” a collaboration with Capinan, celebrates the spirit of resistance in the Northeast, as does the nostalgic “Aguados Meninos.” The simple “Maria (Me Perdoa, Maria)” weaves the album’s romantic moments. “Procissão,” which depicts the faith of the Sertanejo and its social contours, is one of Gilberto Gil’s most beautiful and important songs, and it closes the album. 1LP colored vinyl, single-sleeve jacket.
