The 67-year-old former national music star from West Africa returns to music after a 30-year absence with her major-label debut album for Verve, a country-folk and Afropop masterpiece! The first single "BIRDS GO DIE OUT OF SIGHT (DON'T GO HOME)" features Alison Russell. Peter One, a 67-year-old country-folk musician from the Ivory Coast who now lives in Nashville as a U.S. citizen, premiered an advance single in Rolling Stone magazine, which described the song as "a floating country-tinged acoustic guitar riff and lilting rhythm, a song about Peter's passion for his friends. One's impassioned plea to his friends is transformed, and Alison Russell sweetly resonates with his call to "not go home." Staying together is a recurring theme for Peter One, and part of what he says is his purpose for making music again."Jason Isbell, with whom Peter One is touring, also told Rolling Stone, "When you hear Peter One sing, it sounds like he's singing from a place that is not commercialized. He sings about things that really mean something... You can tell this guy has played for a lot of people a lot of times... And I feel like I'm watching someone who is a legendary singer," he commented. Peter Wang, a native of the Ivory Coast, was once a star in West Africa, where in 1985 he and composer Jess Sa Bi produced the seminal folk album Our Garden Needs Its Flowers as a duo. The album was popular throughout West Africa, and Peter performed his music in front of presidents, first ladies, and sold-out crowds, and his songs were used during Nelson Mandela's release from prison, which was broadcast on the BBC in 1990.In the 1990s, due to political unrest in his home country, Peter moved to the U.S. to make music in the U.S., but the cost of living forced him to change jobs, first as a nurse in Delaware and then in Tennessee, where he has worked in relative obscurity for the past 20 years until now.The 2018 reissue of "Our Garden Needs Its Flowers" was featured in Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, bringing Peter Wang back into the spotlight, and with this album, Peter blends Afro-pop with a soundtrack of country-folk influences from the 60s and 70s He returns to the music scene with his own unique work. The album was co-produced (with Peter Wang) and engineered by Matt Ross-Span (Jason Isbell, John Prine), with Pat Sansone (Wilco), Ken Coomer (Uncle Tupelo), and Paul Niehaus (Calexico). and some of Nashville's finest musicians. Sung in English, French and Glo, this collection of folk songs is a haunting work that shares stories of divorce, love and loss, and examines the healing power of music and concepts such as diaspora, immigration and homeland.
