The Vaughan Williams Society presents the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams' birth! AlbionRecords, the Vaughan Williams Society's own label that has been featuring the unknown, buried, and unpublished works of Leif Vaughan Williams, presents an album commemorating the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams' birth. This ambitious project was made possible by the generous support of the Vaughan Williams Charitable Trust and many members of the Leif Vaughan Williams Society. The main work on the album, the masked play "Pan's Anniversary," features a text by 17th century English playwright and poet Ben Jonson and incidental music composed by Vaughan Williams (some of the dances were arranged by his friend Holst). The piece was performed only once, at Shakespeare's birthday celebration in 1905, and was reconstructed for this recording.The album features a talented lineup of soloists, led by Mary Bevan, a renowned British soprano whose illustrious career includes the Royal Philharmonic Society's Young Artist Award, the British Critics Circle Award, and in 2019, the prestigious MBE (fifth class baronet of the British Empire) Four beautiful hymns are depicted at the center of the music, woven together by the choir and orchestra. The "Fantasy on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" was originally composed for three groups of strings, but in this album it is arranged for string octet plus choir. The text for the chorus is an English translation of Psalm 65 by Archbishop Parker. The album closes with the dense ensemble of strings and the majestic sound of the chorus, which reminds one of a pipe organ. Tokyo M-Plus
