First appearance! Tennstedt's Stravinsky "Tonight's Tennstedt concert will never be surpassed"...Gramophone's Concert Review. As principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1983 to 1987, Tennstedt was primarily a specialist in German-Austrian works, and was especially acclaimed for his performances of the Mahler cycle. He rarely conducted ballet music, and there are no authorized recordings of these works by Stravinsky. This 1992 concert, a performance in Tennstedt's later years, was, as noted in the aforementioned review, a surprisingly lively affair, with the mystical "Firebird," based on a folk tale, and the grotesque "Petrushka," both of which sent the full house into a frenzy of excitement.In this live recording, the applause is cut off in "Petrushka," which ends quietly and eerily, but the hearty applause of the audience is recorded in "Firebird," allowing the audience to hear Tennstedt's passionate performance, including the atmosphere of the performance hall.
