Description:
One of the most contemplative pieces of music ever recorded, this is the most graceful Eastern European harmony from a 100 year old wax cylinder. Teppana Janis was born here in the mid-19th century and lost his sight as a young man. In order to earn a living, he went from house to house in the neighborhood playing the kantele (a traditional Finnish and Karelian stringed instrument, a type of box zither from the southeastern Baltic Sea). Jánis also played at dance parties and schools, and in 1911 there are records of his participation in a cantelé and rhuno (epic song) competition in Swistamo. In the summers of 1916 and 1917, the ethnomusicologist Almas Ott Vaisanen met Teppana Janis on a business trip to Swistamo to study cantele. He wrote down 22 kantele melodies, 14 of which he recorded on wax tubes. This work was curated by Death Is Not The End, a group of gifted UK diggers, to unlock melodies that were sealed away nearly 100 years ago.The music is further blended with re-performances by the cantelle player and researcher Arja Kastinen and the late Finnish folk musician Tite Höfflen. Here are a number of unique and intimate masterpieces that follow the graceful harmonies of church music, but paint a meditative soundscape that resembles neither harp nor kalimba. Blessed be the omnipresent prayer and sleep, this is wonderful stuff.
