A compilation of rare recordings of Shidaiqu, a hybrid form of Chinese popular music born in Shanghai, China in the 1920s that combines Chinese folk songs, Western jazz, and film music, is now available. The theme of this compilation, "Shidaiqu," literally means "song of the times," and represents a hybrid musical genre that began to permeate the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai in the late 1920s. At the time, Shanghai was the city with the most developed music business due to the influx of foreign art and culture through concessions by foreign governments. Combining Western pop, jazz, blues, and Hollywood movie soundtracks with traditional Chinese elements, "period music" (shidaiqu) represented a fusion of music and culture that would form the golden age of Chinese popular song and film during the interwar years before communism. This compilation is an anthology of this "Shidaiqu" and brings together a wide collection of recordings.The first song on the album is "Drizzle" (1927), the first Chinese pop song and the first "shidaiqu" (period song), which was called a "new type of love song" at the time. The composer, Li Jinhui, is also known as the founder of Shanghai jazz. Also included are songs by Bai Hong, Bai Guang, Gong Qiuxia, Li Xianglan, Wu Yingyin, Yao Lee, and Zhou Xuan, all divas who supported this golden era. This album contains songs that were recorded until government cultural regulations made pop music and nightclubs illegal and brought this music to an end.
