Tinazzoli, Agostino (1660-1725)
Description:
Agostino Tinazzoli [1660-1723] was an Italian Baroque composer born in Bologna and died in Pesaro. The few works that we have been able to hear have been quite fascinating, but this album is a landmark in that it is a two-disc set just for Tinazzoli, and includes all of Tinazzoli's surviving keyboard works, with a focus on harpsichord works, as well as organ works, and Tinazzoli's instrumental music The album succeeds in demonstrating the breadth of Tinazzoli's instrumental style. Performer Pierini is an Italian standout. Playing a Carlo Grimaldi model, he delivers a performance that combines the beauty and power of the Italian harpsichord. The organ is the Bonizzi Inzoli organ from the church of St. Michele Arcangelo in Rocca Massima, a mountain village near Rome. About the work] This is a collection of keyboard works by the Italian Baroque composer Agostino Tinazzoli [1660-1723]. The life of Tinazzoli, who was born in Bologna and died in Pesaro, is still poorly known, and only a few scores have been discovered, including a fragment of a requiem, oratorios such as "Jephthah's Sacrifice," and works for keyboard. However, the few pieces that we have been able to hear so far are quite fascinating. This collection of solo keyboard music is performed using two manuscripts currently preserved in Münster and Bologna. The Münster manuscript contains all the pieces on the two CDs, while the Bologna manuscript contains Toccata No. 18 and an expanded version of Toccata No. 17 (the Münster manuscript contains only the first piece). Four of the pieces in this collection, including one Elevazione (Eucharistic Consecration), one Offertorio (Offertory), and one Post Annus, are pious organ pieces intended to be used in the Mass. A wide range of styles and forms are employed, from concerto-like pieces such as Toccata No. 17 and Sonata No. 4 to dance-like pieces such as the fugato of the Offertorio, the Sarabanda of Sonata No. 4, and the Menuetto of Capriccio No. 3, conveying the variety of Tinazzoli's compositional style.
