All songs on this album were written by Michel himself and produced by Josh Johnson, a multi-instrumentalist and composer who has worked with a variety of artists including Harry Styles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Leon Bridges. In addition, Jason Moran, Ambrose Akinmusire, Joel Ross, Jeff Parker, Brandy Younger, Julius Rodriguez, Mark Juliana, Corey Henry, Joan as Police Woman, Tandiswa, and other prominent figures in the jazz world have participated as guests. Tandiswa, and many others.While deeply influenced by jazz, Michelle's roots in soul, R&B, and Afrobeat have been sublimated into her own unique sound, creating a new page in her career. Michelle, who was able to spend some time with music during the pandemic, said of her Blue Note debut, "I've always loved seeing the Blue Note logo on records. The word jazz is very heavy for me, but I am very excited to be a part of this label that is pursuing self-expression. This album is about a new way of looking at old things, and it all started when my parents passed away. After their death, everything changed so quickly, and my own way of looking at things changed in the blink of an eye. While sorting through my parents' belongings, I found the first Real Book (a collection of sheet music of jazz standards) that my father had given me. It's what I grew up listening to, learning, and memorizing. And then, having experienced life, I went into my imagination and immersed myself in listening to music," he says.Although she has been featured on Blue Note releases such as Robert Crasper's "Black Radio" and Jason Moran's "All Rise," this is the first time she has released a record under her own name on Blue Note.
