*Rustlings* is an album consisting of two works by Maya Benard, an up-and-coming composer and violinist based in Stockholm. One of the tracks, “dormantgardensi.” (2022), was written for the duo “andPlay”—comprising Bernado (violin) and Hannah Levinson (viola)—and is performed by them. The other track, “summerrustlings” (2024), is a solo violin piece performed by Benard herself. Both works were composed inspired by Benard’s experience of moving from New York to Sweden. Through her walks amidst Sweden’s lush landscapes, she forged a new relationship with nature and herself. Her performance and compositional practice are deeply intertwined with the violin, exploring the acoustic properties of triads in string instruments and the generation of their resonance. While these works hold a sense of tranquility beneath the vibrant resonance of the strings, the violin and viola convey a sharp, penetrating clarity reminiscent of Nordic light. Bernado’s music is filled with the harshness of nature and the vitality of life, devoid of sentimentality. Its refreshing purity borders on asceticism, yet possesses a powerful transparency. And toward the end of “summerrustlings,” the sequence of sounds highlights the stillness as if giving form to the silence, reaching a moment of breathtaking beauty. Tokyo M-Plus
