Description:
This is the story of Francesco Foscari and his son Jacopo Foscari, who became governor of Venice in the early 15th century. It is the son Jacopo who is put on trial from the beginning. He is suspected of treason, the plot of his father's political enemy, Loredano. His own father, Francesco Foscari, is the governor and therefore must judge the crime, even if he is the son. Jacopo's wife, Lucrezia, desperately pleads her husband's innocence, but Francesco cannot let his personal feelings get in the way. Francesco is caught between his father and his position as governor. And the laws of the world, which seem to be merciless, take away his innocent son and his position as governor as well. Verdi's (1813-1901) early masterpiece "The Two Foscari" is a historical tragedy based on a real person. It is a psychological battle between Francesco, a governor who has become entangled in a political conspiracy, and Loredano, who is trying to bring him down.Verdi gave depth to this story by making the baritone the protagonist. Placido Domingo sings this difficult role. Melli, as Jacopo, also sings with a beautiful voice.
