Description:
All three composers featured on this album have a strong connection with the cello. Riccardo, Maripiero's nephew, was a cellist at La Scala in Milan, and Ghedini himself studied the cello from an early age. Casella, whose father, uncle, and grandfather were cellists, has played the cello since childhood, but switched to the piano when he discovered he was more talented. All three of these works for cello explore a variety of atmospheres in which the soloist and orchestra work together, and the cello is not the only virtuoso performer. The pieces by Malipiero and Guedini both have an 18th-century concerto-grosso feel, and are written with the soloist and orchestra on equal footing. The Casella piece is an exercise in orchestration for writing a concerto, and again great attention is paid to the balance between cello and orchestra, performed by cellist Sugaev, who was born in Moscow in 1988.
