Description:
Franz Liszt (1811-1886), the "wizard of the piano," wrote many piano and orchestral works, but did not leave many chamber works. This album is a collection of such rare works. The Sonata for Duet, although named "Sonata," is completely different from the usual sonata form, and all four movements are based on the Mazurka Op.6-2 by Chopin, a close friend of his. In the first movement, the mazurka is played somberly, and in the second movement, the mazurka is played almost in its original form, then appears with various variations. In the third movement, it becomes a light, graceful dance that builds to a passionate climax. In the final movement, the melody, which was originally Chopin's, emerges in a powerful and gorgeous Liszt-like costume. The Wedding Song is a charming piece of music written for Liszt's friend, the Hungarian violinist Eduard Lemenyi.Three Gypsies" is a work that makes the most of the characteristics of the violin, while "Improvised Waltz" was originally a piano piece that Hubay arranged for the violin. Elegy" is also an arrangement from a piano piece. The Concerto Grand Duet is a spectacular work that requires superb technique from both violin and piano. Naxos Japan
