Description:
Brahms' (1833-1897) three piano quartets were all first conceived around 1855. At the time, Brahms supported Schumann, who was ill, and was close friends with his wife, Clara. The first quartet was begun at this time but abandoned, completed six years later in 1861, and published by Zimrock in 1863. Schoenberg's orchestral version of this youthful quartet is also very popular. Although not included here, the second quartet was completed the year after the first, and was the most popular at the time due to its cheerful tone. Brahms had completed the C-sharp minor quartet first before these two pieces, but this was eventually revised almost 20 years later and eventually became the "C minor" No. 3. It was performed on a trial basis shortly after its completion, but Brahms was not pleased with it, and the quartet was revised many times before settling on its present form. The third movement of this piece is so beautiful that it was used as the theme for the NHK-FM music program "Great Composers' Time - Brahms" a long time ago, and is a fitting symbol of Brahms' music.
