It’s nice that music like this exists—a composer who turned his back on the trends of his time and consistently wrote beautiful melodies. This is the Third String Quartet by Australian composer Alfred Hill. He studied in Leipzig in the late 1880s and composed several works that blended the German tradition with an Australian flavor. These pieces leave a powerful impression that is impossible to forget once heard. While all the works on this album are fascinating, the program-note-inspired No. 5 is particularly unique. The four movements represent France, the United States, Italy, and the United Kingdom (nations that were allies during World War I), and were later reworked into his Symphony No. 11. While the national characteristics aren’t overly pronounced, you’ll likely find it an interesting listen, thinking, “So this is another way of looking at it.” No. 7 begins solemnly, while No. 9 starts at a leisurely pace; though the sound carries a slight hint of Impressionism, the melodies never falter and remain consistently serene throughout. It is a beautiful work you can enjoy with complete peace of mind. Naxos Japan
