This collection of sacred works, performed in the historic Chapel of St. James’s Palace, stands out among Handel’s compositions for its nobility and can be described as orthodox music that carries on the tradition of predecessors such as Purcell. Recorded at the Chapel of St. James’s Palace, this CD can truly be called an authentic recording. This recording features the rediscovery, restoration, and performance of choral works that Handel wrote for the Royal Chapel Choir and which were performed there—works that are exquisitely beautiful yet virtually unknown, and which have likely not been performed since their premiere at that chapel. Handel’s English church music—among the most impressive works of Baroque music—spans his entire career in London, from the first anthems he composed shortly after his arrival in London to the works of his very late period, nearly 40 years later. Most of these works were born out of Handel’s creative engagement with the Church of England.
