Description:
The 18-year-old Richard Strauss composed the "Horn Concerto No. 1" as a tribute to his father Franz, who was the principal horn player of the Munich Court Orchestra. Strauss was familiar with the horn from an early age, composing "Alphorn" at the age of 12 and "Andante" at the age of 24 (the album includes a version with chamber orchestra by L. Opfermann), and the horn played an important role in his later orchestral works as well. The horn also played an important role in his later orchestral works, indicating his deep attachment to the instrument. In his old age, Strauss completed a second horn concerto, "Dedicated to the memory of my father," which was premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 1943. This concerto, written in the same key of E-flat major as the first concerto, is a work with youthful dynamism, in which the horn sings the melody majestically with superb technique in a nostalgic tone reminiscent of Mozart. Eberhard Krok's arrangement of "Four Last Songs" for chamber orchestra adds a new, transparent charm to this late masterpiece. The horn solo at the end of "September" is also impressive. The soloist is Christoph S., principal horn player of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra.He has won prizes at many international competitions, including the Munich International Music Competition (ARD) and the Richard Strauss Competition.
