Olivier Messiaen wrote this score in a flash of brilliance in just a few months in 1944. Messiaen takes full advantage of the richness of his musical language, which ranges from the mundane to the Hindu, from Greek rhythms to birdcalls. The works are universal and self-evident, but at the same time they are the realm of the divine, where the works are imbued with a particular truth. Mysticism, for those who know how to give up the divine, is in the observation of nature and can quickly become overwhelming as we try to contemplate the universe around us. But whether it is the brevity of a haiku or a monumental creation, a cathedral to cite the first example that comes to mind, for example, this work is a Messianic fusion of them all. Bertrand Chamayou, who plays here, was so struck by this work when he heard it almost 30 years ago at the age of 9 that he decided to become a pianist.It is no exaggeration to say that I considered this endless conceptual area piece written for the piano and that it has partially shaped my own perception of how to play, sound, and artistry ever since."
