[The Magic of the Flute, Woven by Two Masters from the Middle Ages to the Present] A recorder duet album by master musician Giovanni Antonini. His partner is Shen-fang Chiu (Qiu Shengfang), a Taiwanese musician currently based in Austria who has performed in Japan as a member of the recorder trio “Vivid Consort.” Centered around 18th-century works by Otter and Telemann, as well as a suite composed by the contemporary Sicilian composer Amico Dolci when he was 16, the album features a diverse program that includes pieces from the 15th-century “Faenza Manuscript” and short works such as Bartók’s 20th-century duet. Audiences can fully enjoy the ensemble’s signature virtuosic technique, including the feat of playing two instruments simultaneously in pieces such as Bartók’s works and a three-part piece attributed to Preston. Additionally, the program features a new work by Giovanni Sollima, in which a sopranino recorder intertwines with bird song over a melody by William Byrd; Jan van Eyck’s “Amarilli, Bella,” performed as a Renaissance flute duo that produces a crystal-clear tone reminiscent of a glass harmonica; and Dolci’s avant-garde piece, which features double-stopping, this ambitious album pushes the expressive boundaries of the recorder family.
