Wilhelm Gross (Grosch), who would have celebrated his 130th birthday in 2024, was a composer and pianist from Vienna. He studied under Richard Robert and Franz Schreker, and by the age of 19 was hailed as a “brilliant talent.” After working in Mannheim and Vienna, he joined the Berlin-based record player manufacturer and label Ultrafon in 1927. However, his career was cut short by the Nazi annexation of Austria, and after fleeing to the United Kingdom in 1934, he achieved success under the pseudonym Hugh Williams with film scores and pop songs such as “Lights of the Harbor.” This album is the second and final volume in a series covering Gross’s piano works. While the first volume highlighted the dance music aspects of the 1920s, this second volume centers on the “Symphonic Variations on an Original Theme,” a work of great technical skill and grand conception, and also includes “Three Miniatures” discovered just before the recording, as well as waltz arrangements reflecting the Strauss boom in London.
