The eighth and final volume of Louis Lortie's complete Chopin cycle provides an overview of the composer's entire creative period. The collection includes "Introduction and Brilliant Polonaise," a gorgeous early work for cello and piano written for the Duke of Radziwił and his daughter Wanda, a rondo with "Op. 1," and "Brilliant Variations," based on a melody from Errol's opera "Ludwig, The mazurkas composed in 1842 and 1844 are masterpieces that show Chopin at the height of his maturity and popularity. The Cello Sonata, which Chopin dedicated to his close friend Franschaume, was written with him in mind and was performed at Chopin's last public performance in 1848. Requiring a high degree of virtuosity on piano and cello, the work's use of counterpoint is a demonstration of solid construction. Tullus Mørk, who performs in the Polonaise and Cello Sonata, was born in Norway. He has performed with the world's leading orchestras and has received high international acclaim, including Grammy and Spelman awards.
