Rameau's "Castor et Pollux," published in 1737, is his second lyric tragedy after his stage music debut "Ippolito et Arisi" in 1733 age 50 and "The Elegant Indian Countries" in 1735. After he won the patronage of the French royal family, the work was restaged with major revisions in 1754 and became one of the most popular works in the field; in 2015, a recording of the entire 1754 version by Pygmalion conducted by Raphael Pichon (harmonia mundi france) made a splash, and now the The new ALPHA release is the premiere version, which was performed 20 times to great acclaim, but for some reason was never performed again. The protagonists of the story are brothers who are modeled after the constellation Gemini, one of the twelve zodiac signs of the ecliptic.
