SACD layer: Stereo, Multi-Channel 5.0 Masaaki Suzuki and the Bach Collegium Japan, who have recorded a number of highly acclaimed recordings of religious music by Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, have now taken up Brahms's masterpiece. This recording is based on the performance at the Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall on January 19, 2024, and the recording session that preceded it.From the beginning of the cello and contrabass, the rhythm is heavy on its feet yet propulsive, and the chorus is clear and clear. The powerful expressions heard from the second movement onward are also in line with the text and the progression of the music, and are very effective while flowing very naturally. The chorus is also outstandingly skillful, giving a sense of sophistication and warmth in every scene. The baritone and soprano solos are also beautiful and powerful, harmonizing well with the music and adding a striking touch. Masaaki Suzuki, who has breathed new life into religious music from the Baroque to the Classical period, has his own unique perspective, shedding a new light on this Romantic masterpiece with a certain coolness, sometimes even celebratory, and singing the solace of the soul in this wonderful performance. The sound created by the instrumental team, which includes world-class players such as concertmaster Ryo Terakobe, Shinyo Fukukawa on horn, and Mayumi Shimizu on trombone, is also very attractive. Released on SACD hybrid disc, you can more than enjoy the excellent recording that balances the outlook and the sense of sound field. (Naxos Japan)
