No. 62, "Come, O Savior of the Gentiles," is a cantata for the First Sunday of Advent, 1724. A masterpiece of Bach's originality, it is based on Luther's hymn and explores the deep connection between music and lyrics.Adopting the form of a French overture, the opening chorus concludes with an elaborate melody by strings and oboe. A light tenor aria reminiscent of a dance is followed by a bass aria with a heroic atmosphere, and the piece concludes with a grandiose praise to God in Luther's classical chorale. Cantata No. 52, "I depend not on Thee, O world of falsehood," was performed on the 23rd Sunday after the Trinity in 1726. The lyrics, which contrast the falsity of the world with the truthfulness of God, are taken from the Gospel of Matthew chapter 22, and combine a biblical allegory with music to portray a message of faith and morality. In the fifth aria, "I am with the God I love," light, dance-like music played by oboe and bassoon creates a secular atmosphere that contrasts with the lyrics, and the cantata concludes strongly with a final chorale that symbolizes faith-based conviction and hope. No. 6, "Remain with us, O evening," was performed on Monday, the second day of Easter, April 2, 1725. Based on Luke 24:13-35, it conveys hope and the strength of faith in the midst of sorrow, and embodies the Easter themes of "new life" and "salvation" through the contrast of darkness and light, despair and hope. The opening chorus depicts the sadness and confusion of the disciples before Christ's resurrection, followed by a beautiful alto aria that seems to bring signs of hope to the disciples' hearts, a pastoral chorale and recitative, and an aria in tenor singing a call to repentance and faith. It concludes with a powerful prayer chorale based on a Lutheran hymn. (Naxos Japan)
