Karl Weigl was a composer of the late Viennese Romantic period. He was trained in composition by Zemlinsky, and at the University of Vienna he associated with Webern and Schoenberg. 1903 he founded the "Society of Creative Musicians," of which he was a member, and was involved in premiering the most advanced music of the time, but when the Nazis annexed Austria in 1938, he went into exile in the United States, He fled to exile in the United States. Weigl continued to compose until his death, but remained committed to the late Romantic style based on tonality throughout his life and did not follow progressive trends.The two works on this album were composed in the early 1930s and offer a taste of his skillful orchestration and beautiful melodies with a majestic climax.
