Pieter Jablonsky Plays Ronald Stevenson]Pianist Pieter Jablonsky, who has a strong commitment to his own repertoire, has tackled this collection of works by Scottish composer Ronald Stevenson, which includes four world premiere recordings. Stevenson, best known for his 70+ minute long "Passacaglia with DSCH," continued the virtuoso tradition of Chopin, Liszt, Godowsky, and others, but also took a keen interest in Scottish folk music. He left more than 500 works, including over 100 piano pieces. This album contains works written between 1959 and 2002. The album includes transcriptions from operas by Britten and Paderewski, Mozart's "Romance" with Stevenson's unique harmonies, "Ostinato Macabro" played only by the left hand, and "The Flight of the Bearcat" by Rimsky=Korsakov combined with Chopin's Exercises Op. 10-2. The program features unique pieces that require superb technique, such as "Korsakov and Chopin Exercises," a combination of Rimsky=Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" and Chopin's Exercises Op. 10-2.Jablonsky plays these pieces beautifully, and his sensitivity, technique, and expressiveness are on full display in this album.
