Rieti(1898-1994): Complete Works for Piano Solo & Duo, Vol. 2 Vittorio Rieti was born in Egypt as the third generation of Italian immigrants. After serving as a cadet in World War I, he moved to Italy at the age of 19. He studied composition with Respighi, Maripiero, and Casella, and in 1925 went to Paris to study. In 1925, he went to Paris to further his studies. It was during this period that he composed two ballets, "Barabau" and "Lebal," for Balanchine, whom he met. In 1944, he became a naturalized U.S. citizen, teaching at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and the School of Music in Chicago, while spending half the year in Europe, where he composed numerous works in all genres, including orchestral, chamber, and film music. His works were influenced by Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, and Prokofiev, and his orchestral works in particular were performed and highly acclaimed by such renowned conductors as Toscanini, Stokowski, and Kubelik. Following the first collection (GP921), this second collection of piano music includes waltzes and small pieces that evoke influences from the New Viennese School and Stravinsky, as well as the atmosphere of New York's Broadway and Paris' trendy clubs. All are world premiere recordings. As in the first collection, the duo is played by Giorgio Koukl, born in the Czech Republic in 1953, who is also an active composer.
