Description:

Eugen Engel was born in Prussia in 1875 to Jewish parents. In his spare time, he began composing music and, with the help of private lessons, wrote several works almost entirely on his own. Engel's life seemed to be smooth sailing, but in the 1930s, the Nazis were on the rise, and he left for the Netherlands in 1939 to escape the Nazis. In 1939, he went to Holland to escape the Nazis, and in 1943, he was sent to a concentration camp to end his life. The opera "Grete Minde" was written between 1914 and 1933 and is based on the short story of the same name by Theodor Fontane, a 19th century German writer. It is the tragic story of a woman abandoned by her family and society, who sets fire to the city in revenge and dies in the flames herself. This two-disc set documents the work as it was restored from a manuscript score kept by his daughter Eva and premiered at the Magdeburg Theater almost 90 years after its completion. Although Engel was not a musician by profession, one can only be amazed at the enthusiasm and power that can be felt in the profound music reminiscent of Korngold and Wagner. The booklet includes Engel's biography and libretto (in English and German) by playwright Ulrike Schröder, who worked on the premiere. Naxos Japan
