A collection of cantatas by Rudolf Lutz and the Bach Foundation Orchestra. Three cantatas are performed in the 42nd collection. No. 2, "O God, from Heaven Behold" was written for the Second Sunday after Trinity, June 18, 1724. The opening chorus is led by the organ, followed by a tenor recitative, an alto aria with a solo violin, a beautiful bass recitative, and a tenor aria characterized by the insistent rhythmic repetition. The final movement closes with a simple chorale involving the organ solo. No. 185, "O Merciful Heart of Eternal Love," is a cantata first performed on the fourth Sunday after Trinity in 1715. The opening soprano and tenor duet depicts God's mercy and compassion for mankind. It then depicts the teachings of Jesus in various forms and concludes with a chorale accompanied by a violin solo. No. 37, "He Who Believed and Was Baptized," is a cantata for May 18, 1724, the Feast of the Ascension of Christ. Despite the fact that it is a praise of Jesus, it is characterized by its simple composition with a string ensemble and two oboes d'amore.The third piece is written in the form of a chorale concerto, with a gorgeous interplay between the sung part and the bass solo.
