A new series on the cpo label, the complete symphonic works of Grażyna Bacevich. The first collection features two symphonies written in the 1950s. Both were written before she was injured in a car accident, and both are beautifully brought to life with the subtle French use of tone that she developed during her studies in Paris. Although No. 3 is written for a large orchestra, it is a unique work that also finds a light-hearted expression in the neoclassical tradition. No. 4 is similarly varied, with English horns, E-flat and bass clarinets, contrabassoon, harp, and other instruments. The piece also incorporates material from Polish folk music, a characteristic of hers, and offers a wonderful fusion of tradition and inspiration. The Cologne WDR Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Polish conductor Wukasz Borowicz, will perform the piece. The lineup is well suited to take on this new project. Naxos Japan
