Description:
A collection of chamber works by English composer Ernest Moran. He loved Ireland and made it his second home, living for two years on Valentia Island and later in Kenmare from about 1934 until his death. All of the chamber works on this album are said to have been influenced by his experiences in Ireland in their melodies. The early piano trio shows Ravel's influence, but the overall scale is large, and the cello sings an Irish folk melody in the second movement. The "Sonata for Two Violins" (1930) is a work with a brooding atmosphere reminiscent of his mentor John Iarland, but with virtuosity on the violin as well. The Prelude for Cello and Piano from 1943 is a beautiful piece written for the cellist Piers Courtmore, whom he would later marry. It is performed by the Fidelio Trio, which has strong ties to Ireland, and violinist Nicky Sweeney. Naxos Japan
