Description:
This is a live recording of a performance by Haskil and Karajan on the second day of the first Mozart Week Festival celebrating the bicentennial of Mozart's birth in January 1956. Despite their brief collaboration, Haskil and Karajan felt an ideal partnership, but because they could not record together due to differences in record company contracts at the time, the few remaining live recordings are a limited record of the chemistry between the two musicians. Haskil's beautiful soft tones and crisp expression, supported by Karajan, are superb. The symphony is also on a grand scale from the very beginning, and the performance shows the trust between Karajan and the Philharmonia Orchestra. The bonus track, Mozart's Variations, was recorded live in Besançon in September of the same year. The richness of expression in each note can be said to be unique to Haskil.The concerto and symphony recordings are the same as those also released on the belvedere label (BELVED10152), but this remastering has made them clearer, as if a veil has been removed, and the graininess of the piano tone in particular has been enhanced.
