The first installment of the GrandPiano label’s 10th-anniversary commemorative series. A 10-disc collection of works by female composers, released in time for International Women’s Day! Until the mid-20th century, the world of classical composition was overwhelmingly male-dominated. It was considered the norm that women were unsuited for composition; they were denied opportunities to perform their works, excluded from intellectual circles, forced to devote themselves to the household, and judged primarily on their appearance. However, it is said that throughout history, there have been more than 6,000 women composers. Each of them carved out her own musical path through her own unique struggles. Brion de Juy, who remained a lady of good family who also enjoyed music; Mongeroll, who, despite her privileged background as a marquise, lost her husband in the French Revolution but went on to survive by wielding her musical talent as her weapon; Shimanovskaya, who captivated even Goethe with her piano skills and striking beauty; Kaplárková, who garnered attention as a passionate advocate for modern Czech music but died of illness at the age of 25; and Ekanyaka of Sri Lanka, who continues to compose modern tonal music incorporating elements of pop and folk—the lives of these 19 female composers are chronicled here. — Takuo Yoshiike (Supervisor) *The Japanese edition includes Japanese commentary by Motoi Tanido and Midori Kobayashi, who serve as chairpersons and supervisors of the “Association for the Promotion of Unknown Music” and are co-authors of *Biographies of Women Composers*.
