Description:
The popular German vocal ensemble "Singer Poor" sings "The Fiddle Players of Echternach". This piece is based on a well-known Luxembourg legend, which is said to be the origin of the "Dancing Procession of Echternach," which was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2010. The story is about a musician who goes on a pilgrimage to the East with his ailing wife. When he returns home, he is accused of killing her on the pilgrimage and sentenced to death. In fact, the accused relatives had embezzled his property during his pilgrimage. The musician is allowed to play the fiddle as his last wish, but when people hear him play, they start dancing as if possessed and cannot stop. Finally, the dancing stopped with the blessing of St. Willibrord, and the musician, who did not like the magic of the music, broke the fiddle by hitting it on the gallows and left the place. Based on this story, the Luxembourg writer Nick Welter composed the text, and the Luxembourg woman composer and pianist Lou Koster composed the ballad for chorus and orchestra, which was premiered at the Echternach Abbey in 1972 with great success.This time, Sandrine Cantoreggi plays the violin at the heart of the story, using an arrangement of the piano accompaniment version.
