The album titled "1824" presents two string quartets that clearly show the transition from Classical to Romantic music in Vienna. Beethoven's 9th Symphony was premiered at the Kärntner Theatre in Vienna in 1824, and is known to have made a strong impression on the young Schubert, who was present at the premiere. Beethoven completed his 12th string quartet in 1824 at the request of the Russian Duke of Galtsin. It was premiered by the Spanzig Quartet, whom Beethoven trusted, but it was a disaster. Beethoven replaced the first violin from Spanzig with a young player, Joseph Böhm, and tried to perform it again, which was a great success. Incidentally, this piece, along with Nos. 13 and 15, was dedicated to Duke Galitzin, who commissioned it. Around the same time, the 27-year-old Schubert completed his string quartet No. 12, which was also premiered by the Spanzig Quartet in March 1824.This one was a great success and was published in September of the same year, making it the only string quartet published during Schubert's lifetime. These two pieces will be performed by the Pacific Quartet Vienna, founded in 2006 by students of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
