Handel (1685-1759)

Description:

The Vienna Academy Orchestra, an ancient instrument orchestra that has recorded nine symphonies and orchestral works by Beethoven to great acclaim in a historic building in an environment as close as possible to where they were first performed, not to mention the instruments and techniques of the time, in the golden hall where the New Year's Concert is held, the organ of which is the essence of Handel's The Vienna Academy Orchestra. For this recording of the organ concerto by Handel, a composer who had a considerable influence on the Viennese music of the post-classical period, including Haydn and Mozart, they chose a venue and instruments that are familiar from the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert: the Great Hall of the Musikverein and its organ, which was built in 1872 by Friedrich Radegaard. The current organ, the fourth generation of which was installed in 2011, is a Rieger organ that reproduces not only the symphonic sound of the Romantic period, but also the small, theater-quality organ that Handel envisioned. It can also reproduce the sound of a small theater organ as envisioned by Handel. Herselbeck and his colleagues bring out the best of this instrument with the harpsichord's bass passages as well. In addition to Haselbeck himself, the organ and harpsichord are played by Jeremy Joseph, a talented South African who has been attracting attention mainly in German-speaking countries.Under the direction of Nicolas Bartholomew, a highly respected technician of ancient instrumentalists, the performance is both brave and detailed, and is clearly recorded along with the resonance of the historic hall. This is a reliable new recording that offers a taste of the "real thing" from various perspectives, including the history of Viennese music, the history of the revival of old music, and Handel's own music-making.
