Description:
The music of Czech-born Zelenka, who served the Dresden court as a double bassist and composer, has been acclaimed as comparable to or even "better than" that of his neighbor Bach, especially in the field of church music, and no recording is complete without listening to it. This is a serenata-like Passion Week music for Maria Josepha, Electress of Saxony, who followed the religious worship customs of her native Austria, even though she had converted to Catholicism at the Dresden court in order to succeed to the throne of Poland. The music is full of Zelenka's unique expressive sound, which is somewhat different from the Italian operatic language used by Hasse, who was also a member of the same court. The Collegium 1704, led by Václav Luks, who has also released recordings on the Czech Supraphon label, is an outstanding group that has been highly acclaimed in France, Belgium, and other leading countries of ancient music. This is a piece that allows you to feel the richness of the late baroque music of the 1730s as well as the "fun of discovery" that is unique to Europe, where the revival of ancient music has progressed.
