Pancho Vladigerov is a modern Bulgarian composer, and an important figure in the history of Bulgarian music, having been a founding member of the Bulgarian Society for Contemporary Music in 1933. This 2-CD set contains mainly orchestral works that are richly infused with Bulgarian folk songs and those of neighboring Europe. These include the most frequently performed of Vladigerov's works, the Bulgarian Rhapsody "Vardar," and "Hora Staccato," which Vladigerov himself arranged into an orchestral version. Wielding the baton here is his son, Aleksandr (1933-1993). He gives a superb performance to carry on the music of his great father into the future.
