Description:
Kathleen Ferrier, one of the leading contralto singers of the first half of the 20th century, left behind a number of masterpieces during her short 41-year life, and these recordings are still widely loved today. This album contains her lesser-known English songs. The earliest of these recordings is the "Flower Song" from Britten's "The Rape of Lucrecia," recorded in 1946, and from then until nine months before her death in 1953, she sang at various times. All of these recordings were made for DECCA and the BBC, but Lennox Barkley's "Four Poems of St. Teresa of Avila" has never been published. The booklet accompanying the album was written by baritone Thomas Allen, who is currently a trustee of the "Kathleen Ferrier Award. The booklet, along with the commentary, sheds new light on Ferrier's exceptional talent and her singing. Naxos Japan K.K.
