HAPPY PROJECT

Description:

If the engineer were Brazilian, would the sound come out that natural even if we recorded in Japan? During the production of his previous album, Omura felt that the character of the sound recorded in São Paulo was completely different from that recorded in Japan. He found Carlos KKA Kamine, the Brazilian engineer he’d met during the São Paulo recording session, on social media and messaged him to request a recording session in Japan. At a subsequent meeting, moved by Omura’s enthusiasm, the project slowly got underway. This album was produced with Francis Silva—Omura’s dance mentor and a world-class vocalist and percussionist—serving as music director, while also seeking advice from pianist Kiichi Nimura, who regularly supports Omura’s live performances. I wanted to explore the overwhelmingly different sense of rhythm found in Brazil. My longing for natural, gentle sounds and my curiosity about rhythm are now unstoppable. With the cooperation of wonderful Japanese musicians, and despite nearly running aground many times—stopping to reassess and adjust course along the way—I’m proud to present this album, which is finally complete. I am deeply grateful to my childhood friend, Takamasa Segi—a sanpoña and quena player—who encouraged me, telling me I could pursue my ideal vision up to 90%. He joined me on two tracks, adding an indescribably rich depth to the music. I would also like to express my gratitude to Celsode Almeida, a drummer based in Brazil. Although Celso is a brilliant musician who has performed with many Brazilian legends, including Hoz Passos, he took the time to listen to the message of an unknown Japanese singer, agreed to perform, and sent me wonderful recordings all the way from Brazil. Thank you very much. Although most of the musicians on this album are based in Japan, “Tristeza Peno Chao” features a collaboration across the ocean between Celso’s Brazilian trio and musicians based in Japan, making it one of the album’s highlights.
