Wes Montgomery's incredibly original concepts and style continue to have a profound influence on virtually every jazz guitarist of his era and beyond, as well as a wide range of rock musicians. Known for his unusual technique of plucking the strings with the side of his thumb and his extensive use of octaves, Montgomery played in Lionel Hampton's band from 1948 to the 1950s and in the Master Sounds/Montgomery Brothers with brothers Buddy and Monk. a series of recordings with string orchestra and big band accompaniment became best sellers, but Wes was rarely recorded at his best, and it is often said that his club playing has more warmth and excitement than his studio work. This album, his only "live" album for his first label, Riverside, features tenor saxophone virtuoso Johnny Griffin, and features Montgomery's own rhythm section, which at the time included Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Chapman, all of whom worked with Miles Davis.
