In classical music, the meaning and character of a key are extremely important elements. Although these are works by three composers from different countries and eras, being guided by a single key allows them to come together within me as one grand narrative. For me, the key of D minor evokes a sense of helplessness and powerlessness in the face of fate or destiny—a feeling that one cannot resist—as well as a strong resolve to accept it and move forward nonetheless. These resonances quietly overlap with my own heart, which has wavered, agonized, and struggled as I have progressed in my career as a performer, leading me to this selection of pieces.
